Also, if you have a problem with a Mod/Admin decision then thats what the "Message The Admins" forum is for - post it there instead of starting a flamewar with everyone else - it doesn't do anyone good.. and if done too often could signal the end of EduGeek..

Ive probably had a few posts edited for bad language but apart from that I cant remember ever really being moderated on here. I do see it as primarily a forum for work related stuff though, and while I will get involved in other threads I try to avoid most political ones (partly because they often just descend into childish insults - from both sides) and anything else potentially controversial mainly because while I dont publicise where I work, it isn't impossible to find out considering I have met a few people from Edugeek, and I dont want to get into any carp that could compromise my job, however unlikely

 

The moderation could perhaps be a bit better in regards to telling people why things have been changed/deleted, that would probably stop some of the silliness that occurs at times. But its far from the only forum that does this, on most I go on mods dont always tend to tell people why actions have been taken

Typical, I go away for a long weekend (The Wickerman Festival) in Scotland, and a thread like this appears which requires a response from me!

To put it simply, words have power. Different words have different power on different people. Some words have more than one meaning, and several ways of being judged depending upon the context in which they were used. What the mods have to do is to act as the site police force. If you've ever been stopped by the police you will find that there are good cops, and bad cops, and even good cops having bad days and bad cops having good days. Because they are human, and as such are fallible. As are our members, all of you. Moderation is hard, many times posts must be edited as soon as they are flagged, and action is taken as the situation is seen by the moderator or admin. Sometime an intense discussion takes place in the mods area as to what action should be taken, but in almost all cases, the fact remains that an action MUST be taken, whether editing a post, giving an infraction, or initiating a temporary ban. Sometime we admins shout at the mods (alright, it's Shaun who shouts at the mods), when a decision is made that we don't agree with, and actions readjusted accordingly, but on the whole, the moderators do a hell of a job, and just as the real police force only find themselves dealing with a tiny percentage of the population, so do the mods here, which is why those people feel most put upon.

As for the constant request for rules to be published, I'll say it again, we don't have any as such apart from the following 'guidelines:

 

1. Use 'Netiquette'

2. Don't swear, insult or get aggressive with other members

3. Keep it relevant

4. Be nice

 

They are simple, easy to remember and the same rules that everyone uses in their 'real' life. When people don't use these in real life, the police come. You are bigger here than you imagine. You voices carry a long way, and resonate in places that matter to us as a professional group. When you act bad, it reflects on all of us, because this is not just 'your' community, it's 'ours'. Which is why we have moderators.
