MacBook Pro (Mid 2009 Uni Body 13") Not Booting Correctly .. ???

Afternoon all

 

Right, just got out the old MBP at school to edit a video that was recorded yesterday (see my post in BTRD about the video if you want more info on that). Anyway, it does the following:

 

* Turns on and chimes

* Goes through the spiny wheel loading

* Shows the blue screen just before the login screen

* Hibernates (well turns itself off and the light on the front does it's "breathing" thing

 

I've tried resetting the PRAM and SMC but it does the same thing. It did (after the SMC reset) do the loading bar like it was recovering from a true hibernation, but then went into the same state.

 

I've tried pressing the power button to wake it, closing the lid and reopening it to wake it, etc, but with no joy.

 

It is plugged in and charged. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I dig out the restore disks?

Have you tried holding c when you turn it back on?

I hadn't .. just gone to try it now and the flippin thing has decided to wake up to the login screen .. GAH!!

When I first got my MacBook Pro it did exactly the same thing a couple of weeks later. Finally turned on again and is still going strong 18 months later

It's just weird .. like it went to hibernation and then didn't want to come back from it properly .. or just wanted to keep pressing snooze on the alarm .. to be honest, I know how it feels at the moment .. had a mad few weeks! lol ..

C is to boot a cd so not sure about that advice, the unibody laptops use magnets to ascertain if the lid is shut (sleep) anything nearby?

It's on the same desk as my 15" MBP Unibody which has no issues .. I think it must of just been having a mad moment .. unless that particular part of the desk is reinforced or something .. lol ..

No problem - have been using Macs for years so have encountered nearly every problem you can....my favourite being the iron curtain at set up. Now there's one for you! ha Or the disc getting stuck.....

 

Still the best on the market though....just like Marmite hey

Same here, but this one just threw me completely .. I guess it could of been proximity to the 2 other Macs on my desk that did the magnet thing thinking about what I had out at the time .. ah well .. we shall see if it happens again .. lol ..

Just a FYI but overheating can cause devices to hibernate/switch off as food for thought be it mac or pc.

Have you tried:

Safeboot - Hold down shift key when turning on.

Single User Mode - Hold down cmd and s when turning on, then at prompt type fsck -f (file system check on HDD)

Verbose mode - Hold down cmd and v this will show all background startup stuff and might give you a hint when and what makes it fall over

Thanks ZH, but hopefully it wasn't overheating as it's been sat there doing nothing until I came to turn it on for the first time in a couple of weeks .. that's a serious problem if it was! lol ..

Good tips that I'd forgotten about! Hopefully it's resolved but I'll keep them in mind ..

Another tip would be to install Fan Control (freeware) which helps tweak the fans to keep them cool. The unibodies can overheat to the point it warps the body and then you cant eject the cd drive.
