MP3 Player Help

Seasonal Greetings.

 

My Daughter (13) has had an MP3 player for xmas,

 

1, Is there a good Free Source of downloadable tunes ?. ...Not file sharing please..

 

2, On the box it says "your operating system must be Fat 16/32 " I use NTFS ! Has anyone come across this before or will it work ok ?.

I use Garageband.com when I need a free track or sample. I haven't been to the site for months, so they may have changed the way they do things. Register and give it a go anyway.

 

If the box says FAT16/32 then NTFS formatted systems should be fine. I haven't seen it put this way- they usually just state a minimum operating system or range of OS support (98/ME/2000/XP etc). Give it a go and see.

 

Downloadable music sources vary according to musical taste. I listen to a lot of Indie music and there's a huge range available in OGG format from various sources- none of which involve file sharing.

 

One of the best ways of building a good library is to rummage through music sales in Virgin Megastore etc and grab low price CDs. You can then rip them in and load them onto your player, and you actually "own" the disc then :-)

As kingswood says depends on test while not free best music site I have found is Emusic and they offer 25 download free trail as well .

 

But might not suite your daughters musical tastes as most of artists etc are unknown or early songs from famous artists.

and possibly legal too! I really hope so as, a) I've used it quite a bit, and b) It sticks two fingers up to the Pigopolists of the RIAA and Big Business.

 

The credit card companies are trying to stiff them (at the bidding of RIAA etc) but you can still buy stuff via their sister-site. Be warned though, your C Card company will be twitchy about any Russian transactions. It may get suspended, as mine does each time I buy tracks, but I use my "second" account so I'm not inconvenienced.

Because the mp3 player is "faulty" ( it will not switch on ) things are on holt for now.

 

Can you record from Radio 1 etc. 'streaming' ?.

 

If so, is there any 'free' software to do it ?.

Plenty of free software out there but to record audio streams have long at audacity and recording of the computers stereo...

@tickmike: Legally, recording the radio streams is dodgy. Most shows are available as podcasts though now... Juice is a great app for this.

 

For testing purposes, there are addons available for Firefox that will rip the audio streams.

TotalRecorder is what I use for stuff like that - use it on the "Listen Again" downloads.

Very handy for re-recording protected material purchased from iTunes Music Store ... apparently ... not that I would know.
