JAVA!!!! How do I uninstall it.

OK So I'm getting hacked off. I'm trying to update my Java installation but I can't get the old version off. I cant uninstall it, I've tried a couple of registry cleaners and they are not helpfull. I've looked at the rubbish instructions on java's site and my google fu is weak.

 

To make matters worse I can't seem to install the version my computers think they have or a new version of Java either. So can anyone help me? How to I manually convice my computer that it doesn't have Java installed? What regkeys do I need to remove and any other files or folders?

I know when I have had problems removing applications before I used Microsofts MSI cleanup utility, originally created for rtemoving office componenets but can also be used to uninstall stubborn programs, in my case Norton. Do a search for "MSICUU2", I think that was the exe name.

@ascott2: Thanks it seems to have wored fine. I had downloaded it (eventually) but totally switched off! After having tried two reg cleaner programs that ran as the last stage of the wizzard I installed MS's program then when it didn't do anything I got frustrated and went onto something else. Forgot you have to actually run the program

As far as I know, you can just install the latest version of Java 6 Update 20 over any existing version. Older versions will still be listed in Add/Remove Programs, but only the latest version will be used by IE or FF for example.

It has had two modes for quite a while now:

 

1) Patch in place (or something like that) which upgrades the current version to the latest

2) Parallel install which installs it independently alongside an old version or versions.

 

Fiddling the MSI to do one or the other is all explained on the site somewhere(!).
