Blovking websites at home

Hi all

 

I know of one way of blocking access to websites (using opendns). You basically create an account, set your dns servers to use opendns and set the filtering options you want in the opendns control panel.

 

However is there an easier way? Not for myself but a member of staff who was asking. I really dont want to talk them through the opendns method. any good sw out there, preferably free?

Have just done a google search and have come across this. Never used it so not sure hot good it is.

Most home routers have blocking options these days. Or Microsoft's Family Safety element from the Live Essentials suitewill also do this and more.

If they have Windows 7, then they can use the Parental Controls feature in the control panel. It's really good.

My router has an option to specify the DNS servers rather that picking up the ISP ones.

 

I have pointed it at OpenDNS and then all our computers are covered...

I'd say OpenDNS is easiest. We do do a free filter (dansguardian is part of the SmoothWall family) but it is not suited to home use, unless you are a bit mental
