... only in fiction. Scenario:

  • Drop a machine off the domain
  • Do a P2V of said machine
  • Re-name the virtual machine and re-join domain
  • All is well been using the virtual machine for some time now

Old physical machine wiped re-purposed, re-named and installed Windows 7. Join "new" machine to domain. All is well as I continue to install the required software.

The new virtual machine had it's anti-virus uninstalled and a newer version installed - using an administration console. Virtual machine showing in console as new version. Suddenly, or so it seems, the virtual machine is displaying it's old physical name! However, now I see that the old physical machine is showing in the older version console under it's old name. Check virtual machine, sure enough old version of anti-virus! Check event logs - new name listed up to about a week ago then old name listed.

What's going on, how can a machine re-name itself? Any clues anybody?
