Yesterday the school i got my first job in closed it doors for the very last time. I loved my job there but left in 2008 because of the closure. It only seem like yesterday i was sat at my desk. Allot of my friends had lost jobs and forced to move, its pretty sad.

At the end of term my current school closes and will form a brand new school with a school down the road. Something that also seen people go. But i dont think its as bad as seeing the place i had my first job go.

Are you suggesting we shuffle him off EG before he gets that closed too? ;)

In all seriousness though ... it is sad to see somewhere get closed ... especially when you start thinking of the number of times you ran cables through the ceilings / floors / walls / etc ...

I felt like that seeing bulldozers tearing into the old school building - seeing my old office from the carpark, wall missing, floor hanging buckled, still got my old desk in it..quite a moment.

You sure that wasn't management trying to get your request for air conditioning on the cheap? ;)

Going through exactly the same thing here. This is my first job in education, and on my third day I worked here, the closure was announced. Some teaching staff have gone, a lot have changed roles, but as it stands, support staff are in the dark as to then the redundancies will hit...

I went back to my first school the other week for a meeting with some other NM's/Techs in the area. It was really good to see all the staff, and it kind of made me wish I was back there even though I left for the same reasons as you Zak. It was my first job in the trade and the staff there made it a blast!

What is quite surprising is the amount of schools that close or put into suspended animation each year. Often these are down to falling demographics in a particular area, and mainly hit primary schools, but it does happen to several hundred each year, so it's not some random cruel event (although sad), but rather one, often, of necessity. They are selling the land. The reasons for closure are mixed. They did get best exam results in the LEA for last 3 years...

Unfortunately exam results are literally the least of the LEA's worries nowadays :(

Money saving and political fallout is top priority for the next 5 years.
