As Victor Meldrew would say, "I don't believe it!" - I just checked my wallet as I withdrew £100 from the hole-in-the-wall yesterday and what has it given me...... Elgar 20s - so it looks like a trip to the bank lunchtime! Grrrrrrr.

Heard this only last night! Does that mean we could potentially be stuck with these indefinately if we don't get them changed by the end of today? I thought the banks were obliged to change anything like this although the bbc article suggests this isn't the case (at their own discretion)..

You can always present an old note at the Bank of England and they will exchange it. You have to go in person though so might not be worth it unless you have a fair bit of cash.

I had a mate who was a mechanic and in the eighties and nineties he used to make more from fruit machines than he did from his job. Certain pubs actually banned him. He jacked it in when the machines became harder to beat.

There is no skill to it now, you just count what people put in and take out and pick your time to play, if your happy to walk away with £20 profit and not go for the big wins you can make £40+ a night off one gambler in a busy pub.

I have a colleague from my previous job who does exactly that. He'll just camp out at the bar and watch the machines and then when enough people have played them and not won anything, he'll swoop in and go for gold.

I can't be the only one thinking this is genius *googles for pubs in leicester with wifi and fruit machines...*

Bah my secret is out!

You just have to remember that the people who play them are drunk, so they A) put more money in and B) get angry when you win after them ;)
