Quick server question please

I'm planning a new 2008r2 server with 2 Xeon processors. I see the standard version of 2008r2 can take a maximum of 4 64-bit processors. Does this mean physical processors or cores as the Xeon processors have 4 cores a piece?

Don't know if it helps, but I have 2 x quad cores in my servers on 2008R2 std and it sees all of them.

It sates 4 x64 sockets (aka processors) for Standard edition - Microsoft unlike others licence by socket and not by core.
