craigg Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Good moaning, Just a few queries regarding KMS. Is every KMS client ment to publish an SRV in DNS or just the KMS Server? Also am i right to belive that as quoted by angry technician; There are generic VLK keys you enter for use with KMS. You will find them about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way down this page. The page also describes how to use the slmgr.vbs script included with Windows to manage the entire activation system, including switching from MAK to KMS. To revert a client activated with MAK you need to run SLMGR /IPK GenericActivationKey Thanks once again guys!
jsnetman Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Sounds like you have acitivated kms server on all your clients. You don't need to do anything at all on the clients if the kms server is setup correctly. Provided you have not entered a MAK code in the imaging process. But even then sysprep would strip that out.
SYNACK Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Just the KMS server needs the DNS records, this is what the KMS clients use to find the server to ask it for activation. Yes the /IPK switch will set the key and if you use the generic one it will then look for the KMS server when it needs to activate. If you are able to use Windows 7 Enterprise then this comes preactivated with the generic key so it will automaticly look to KMS without the extra step.

Going to build a new image today and start rolling out more clients over the next few days and hopefully get the count up to 25. Just need to get out of the habbit of building thick images with sysprep

They don't if you just use /ipk, there is another switch that removes the dns records that you must use before /ipk to remove them, I find it easier just to remove them manually in DNS.
techie08 Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Im just about to setup a KMS host on 2008R2 so my Windows 7 clients can activate and was wondering, when i am setup up the KMS host, do i enter the KMS Client setup key for windows 7 or or Server 2008R2? Surely as i want windows 7 clients to authentcate, this would be the key to enter? Thanks
SYNACK Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 The keys activate up to the level of product specified so if you use the Server 2008R2 key it will be able to activate both 7 and 2k8r2, if you use the 7 one it will only be able to activate Windows 7. If you have any volume liscences for Server 2008 R2 then I would use that key. 1

SYNACK Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 If you have more than 25 copies of Windows 7 under your agreement then you will have KMS keys, you would need to get these off your aggreement supplier or prefferably you should have access to the MVLS site for your agreement and you can get it from there. There is not a way to convert the key itself as it is just a different key for the same liscence but designed to authenticat with Microsoft directly rather than via a KMS server.

SYNACK Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Depends on the version of Windows 7 your using if you have a volume account you should be using Enterprise which has some rather useful extra features including being preconfigured to look to a KMS server automaticlly. If for some reason you are not using Enterprise but have access to it, start using Enterprise. But anyway if you have some Business stations you will need to configure them with the KMS client key http://www.edugeek.net/forums/licensing-questions/50536-kms-client-setup-keys.html when deploying them which will also make these look to a KMS server. You would also use this method to convert any machines activated with a MAK key to KMS server by simply changing the key in the computer properties to a KMS client one. When configured with a KMS client key the computer will try finding and activating with a KMS server every so often, if it can't find one you still have a 30 day grace period before it gets stroppy and starts winging to users.

My recent bunch of images dont seem to be activating automatically and im just wondering if Ive neglected to put in a KMS key
SYNACK Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Office 2010 needs its own KMS key and has its own KMS server extention that you download from the same place as the install media in MVLS. When you install it, it will prompt for the Office 2010 KMS key and then once you hit five copies it will activate them. Just remember in 2008R2 it does not open the firewall port automaticly when this is installed so you may need to go and enable the open KMS ports rule in the firewall. This particular trick wasted a good 20 minutes of my time to figure out.
RabbieBurns Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 The office 2010 KMS addon was added to our existing 2008r2 KMS Server that was setup for Windows 7, and im pretty sure its been working on the first and second bunch of rollouts Ive done in the last few weeks.. it just seems this latest batch of 30 or so Im about to deploy warn they arent activated.. I was just wondering if I had to put a key into the actual office instlal or anything?

To run as an Administrator, right-click on the Command Prompt icon and select "Run as Administrator." Once at the command prompt, change your directory to the Office14 directory: cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\" Type the following command and then press Enter to manually tell the PC where to look for the KMS service: cscript ospp.vbs /sethst:your.kms.server.local After confirmation that the KMS server has been manually entered, type this command and press Return to force activation immediately: cscript ospp.vbs /act How do I register my Faculty/Staff copy of Office Professional Plus 2010? Do I need a license code? I just restart the machine and then open and close an Office app a couple of times, seems to do the trick. There is at least a 30 day grace period for activation so I would just make sure that your activation system is still working then leave the rest to do themselves. The KMS bit of office does report what its up to in the event log also so its worth a check in there to see what is going on. That is what I used to check, have never had to force an activation though. 1

If you are using the 2008 server as your KMS server then you will definatly need to use the KMS key to enable it to hand out keys to other computers. When you give the 2008r2 server a KMS key it automaticly sets it up as a KMS server. If you are using a different system as the KMS server then you don't need to change it unless you have four more 2008r2 servers that you need to activate via KMS. Edited June 30, 2010 by SYNACK
