Backup Exec confusion!

Hiya,

 

We're about to upgrade SQL Server from 2005 to 2008 and have been told that SQL 2008 doesn't like backup exec 10, which of course we have. I'm looking at newer versions of Backup Exec but am getting very confused between the available versions. For example the only difference I can see between Symantec Backup Exec 2010 for Windows Servers QuickStart Edition - Complete package - 1 server - OEM - System Builders - DVD - Win - Multi: Amazon.co.uk: Software and Symantec Backup Exec 2010 for Windows Server - Complete package + 1 Year Essential Support - 1 server - Symantec Buying Programs : Business Pack - DVD - Win - Multi: Amazon.co.uk: Software is about £440! The "Manufacturer's Description's" are identical!

 

Basically, we want to backup a shed load of data from our fileservers, and a load of mailboxes onto our VXA Exabyte tape drive which holds ten tapes. We don't need to backup a live SQL database as there are other ways to backup SIMS, although if it is included at no extra cost, then yippee!

 

Can someone please help point me in the right direction?

Oops, nevermind. I've just been told it's actually version 12 that it's apparently not compatible with, not 10!

As BEWS is currently on v12, if you have been informed it isn't compatible with SQL 2008 (which I find strange) I would be fairly certain it isn't compatible with 10. I think we bought 10d way back in 2004!

 

*Edit: OK, so I forgot there's now Backup Exec 2010!

BEWS v12 doesn't support SQL 2008 but v12.5 does - this makes me even more certain that v10 won't.

Also, with the QuickStart edition you can only back up the server BEWS is installed on to a device physically attached to that server i.e you can't use any remote agents. Furthermore, I don't think you can add any additional agents such as SQL agent, AD agent, etc.

36Degress is right, although there are some Agents you can add to it (not 100% sure which one's though). It's also the OEM version, so you wouldn't be able to get any support direct from Symantec either.

From bitter experience I can vouch that 12 doesn't support SQL 2008........
