[SIMS] SQL server using full CPU of server to export CTFs

I found out this morning that when our finance officer runs the export routine for CTF files for our year 8 pupils, it maxes out the CPU usage of SQL server.

 

Now, we're only running the Express edition of SQL 2005, but it has done us fine up until now. We didn't have this problem in previous years.

 

Does anyone have any idea why the CTF export is being so heavy on the server now, or is it simply time to move to the full SQL server to allow it to make use of multiple cores?

Due to Capita recoding some of the Sims modules they now recommend SQL 2008 as its execution of the code is quicker.

I would recommend a move to the Standard SQL2008 or even Enterprise if you can afford it as the use of multi-core CPUs is much better plus a decent amount of RAM (We have 8Gb) this gives quicker access to Sims server from the client workstations and the time it takes the teachers from clicking the Sims shortcut to their welcome page is 11 - 15 secs.

Our problem is that we follow the timeline for SIMS/SQL of our local LEA support team and they have not yet released details of the SQL2008 update to us, so I'd be reluctant to make any changes until they do (as they are the ones who provide our SIMS support).

Yeah, the other issue is that our LEA provide our SLG2 access, so any database changes require them to make changes too - which won't happen until they roll it out LEA wide.

I'd have to agree with Bossman on this one although I'd also give your LEA a prod and ask them when they're migrating you, it's most likely they'll be doing it over the summer but they could just as easily do it in the evening after everyone has logged out of SIMS.net.
