has any one came across, these symbols. ~$ (bobs word doc ect. )

 

when i try and open the document all i get is mswrd632 converter error

 

any thoughts?

The $ files are AFAIK the autosave temporary files used for recovery if Word crashes since the last proper save.

They are the auto save files that are created automatically when someone opens an Office document. They should (but aren't always) be deleted when the document is closed.

 

They should only hang around if Word, Excel or whatever closed unexpectedly, giving you the opportunity to recover the document.

 

Periodically I have a purge on them to release disk space as sometimes they don't disappear automatically when they should!

Just to merge the two above posts together; It's a temporary file created by Word when someone has it open. It contains the information needed should Word crash and it can auto-recover, and it also contains information pertaining to the user who opened it. You're receiving the error because it's only a temp file, not the actual document.

 

Owner File (Same Directory as Source File)

When a previously saved file is opened for editing, for printing, or for review, Word creates a temporary file that has a .doc file name extension. This file name extension begins with a tilde (~) that is followed by a dollar sign ($) that is followed by the remainder of the original file name. This temporary file holds the logon name of person who opens the file. This temporary file is called the "owner file."
