In Beverly, laptops all around, but parents have to pay

 

A new program at Beverly High will equip every student with a new laptop computer to prepare kids for a high-tech future. But there's a catch.

The money for the $900 Apple MacBooks will come out of parents' pockets.

 

"We have one platform," Hayes said. "And that's going to be the Mac."

This worries me more than a little, not just requireing parents purchase laptops but that they purchase possibly the most expencive ones that they could spec without allowing for alternatives.

It'd standard corp mindset being fooled into thinking that the TCO was similiar to an equivalent Win laptop.

 

Of course, had they decided to go with netbooks then the TCO difference would have been signifcant.

 

And its a pretty similiar attitude that schools have to uniform - cost to parents isn't normally high on the priority list

The thing is will the laptop last the entire lifetime of the student at that school? Probably not so they will end up paying twice.

 

It says those who are unwilling to pay can borrow one in the day, but can't take them home so surely they will be at a disadvantage in terms of homework.
