Any pointers for possible causes? I would prefer to fix the pdfs rather then dealing with adobe hell :)

It all boils down to how they were built in the first place. Not much you can do about it if you get one like that. I also get similar problems when trying to open newer PDFs in older version of Adobe Reader. One way around it is to open once in Adobe Reader, go to print it but then use the PDF button to save a copy as a PDF. It usually strips it back to a barebones PDF.

Anyone had problems with pdf viewing in preview? I have a pdf which shows no content under mac.

What version of the pdf specification is the pdf made to?

I have had this issue in the past; if the pdf is made to conform to a later version of the pdf spec than viewer currently supports then it can't always display it. Kinda makes sense as there might be features in the pdf that viewer doesn't know what to do with.

I thought the idea of owning a mac was it 'it just works' - clearly this is not the case......... ;)

The same docs that have problems in preview are an issue in other PDFs readers such as FOXIT and Okular ... I blame Adobe for hating Apple. ;)

Here are some useful keyboard shortcuts:

Log out: shift, command, Q (or shift, option, command, Q to omit the "are you sure?" message)

In Safari, if you have a bunch of tabs open:

Shift, command, [ gives you the previous tab

Shift, command, ] gives you the next tab
