Event Overview

 

This free event is exclusively for staff working within schools in the UK – including classroom teachers, IT specialists, and school leadership teams.

 

The Education team at Microsoft UK have scheduled this event for the summer term 2010 so that schools have the opportunity to evaluate whether the software demonstrated will help you plan your next academic year.

 

To keep the pace moving rapidly, no demonstration will last more than 15 minutes, and although it won’t be a PowerPoint-free zone, we’ll keep to a limit of a maximum of two PowerPoint slides per presenter.

 

Some of the products we aim to cover include: SkyDrive, Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Live PhotoGallery, Bing Maps, Photosynth, Pivot, XNA Game Studio, Flashcards, Autocollage, Songsmith, Worldwide Telescope, Windows Live Writer, Maths Worksheet Generator, Office Add-In for Moodle, Office Ribbon Hero, Bing Search, Microsoft Security Essentials, DeepZoom, Kodu, Mouse Mischief, DreamSpark, Microsoft Robotics Studio, Digital Literacy Curriculum, Windows Live Translator, Internet Explorer 8 Accelerators, PhotoStory 3, Community Clips, Virtual Earth and pptPlex.

 

I have received several invitations to this event and perhaps you have also. However my search of Edugeek found no reference to this event so I thought it would be of use to some if it were posted here.

Innovids are a series of instructional videos created by teachers for teachers as part of the UK Partners in Learning Network programme. Using community clips and Moviemaker, teachers have recorded how they use a range of Microsoft applications in the classroom. These include Office 2007, as well as applications such as AutoCollage and Bing. Each video shows not only how to use the software, but a context in which to use it effectively to support learning across the curriculum.

 

I am contacting our staff to see what they make of these links.

 

Those who do not have a Windows Live ID already may not be inclined to sign up now.

 

Edit: I forgot to include an entry about pptPlex: it allows for the creation of non-linear PowerPoint presentations. You can also zoom in and out of slides making your presentation more interactive and engaging.

 

There is an online application which creates non-linear presentations [the name of which escapes me at the moment: I guess this is Microsoft's answer to that competition]

 

pptPlex is supplied as an MSI and when installed adds a ribbon button to the PowerPoint toolbar.

A lot of the attendees were teachers from schools, and over the lunch break I was asked a couple of times "Would you run this event again, so that I can persuade my network manager to come along, so that he can see what I've seen?".

 

If we ran this event again during the summer holidays, would people be interested?

Summer Holidays are good Ray, any holiday is better than Term Time, you know these teachers don't like us going out for days when they may need us, but they are happy to go out and leave us behind!

Would love to go to this; but it would have to be in the summer. Out several times before the end of term and have been out several times this year .... school wouldn't allow it

Ray - I'm actually the other way around to your question, I'm the techie and if you ran the event again, I'd want to bring the ICT Co-Ord along! Not sure summer holidays are the way to go though, as people - teachers and techies - tend to take holidays during the summer.

 

Excellent day though, and well worth repeating (assuming you'd have something new to show, of course!).
