Cisco IOS ntp question - prevent conversion of dns name to IP address?

In anticipation of a rejig, I've been moving any kit with an IP address as their ntp source to a cname that I can point wherever I need to. This works fine.

But when entering it into mankier versions of IOS (12.*), it translates the cname into the IP address and dumps that into the config (rather than the dns name).

This negates the benefit of using a cname on this kit.

I know I can just give it a bunch of ntp servers to check as a workaround, but is there a way of dumping the cname into the config instead of the IP?
