Laser Link Problems

Hiya bit new to this i got problem with the laser link at work

 

our internet on one of our outreach sites come from a near by school via the laserlink what is happening is we are getting no internet at all till 12 oclock each day both ends of the link have been check but still having the same problem anyone got any ideas ?

What is getting switched on at 12? Does someone come in and switch on their PC/photo copier/ fan ect at 12?

 

If it is regular like that then look for a human turning stuff off to save power and the planet ect.

Sound's plausable to me, does somebody at the other school start at 12, come's in and first thing they do (I usually do) is make a cuppa, and bang your internet is on, it may be that the switch and the kettle are on the same plug socket? Who know's, stranger thing's have happened before!

Laser links are used in some areas as direct line of sight wireless links...

there is nothing in the way of the link

what i was trying to say is that the internet comes though the laser link into our site from the school but for some reason the net does work till 12 but i have rang the school and they say the link is fine on there end plus the internet is working there end have check all the server our end and there fine ?

So you have full access to the netowkr accross the link, just no internet access (Until 12)?

nope the link from the school is just for the internet connection

Just to clarify, at 12 O'clock the internet goes down? Or the internet becomes available?

It may be worth visiting both sites when the laser sender / receiver are plugged in to see what else is plugged into the same socket, these types of issues are always problematic as there is no definitive cause I can see.

I'd agree with the suggestions, actualy visit the other site before 12pm and check the kit is powered on and working with their network.

 

The only other thing I can think of is the link being effected by direct sunlight? There might be some sort of hood or filter missing off one end, causing it no to work in direct sunlight. Sounds a bit far fetched though.

I dont think external support are going to be any use to you here postie!

 

If there are two of you available then maybe have one of you at each end to see what happens when the link becomes available?

 

Is it exactly on 12pm every day, if so then the sunlight idea would be impossible, but a good idea :-)

Can you ping or contact any servers on their end before 12 o'clock?

 

Have you checked that the laser is powered on (you can use a digital camera to see the actual beam)?

 

Does anything specific happen at 12 o'clock?

 

When does the internet disconnect each evening?

thats the thing we dont really support this link when we took the building over the link came with it but trying to talk to the school or 3rd party are useless

Sunlight effects east-west links more than any other(due to the sun being low in the sky) and the installers would/should have installed sunshields on each end if it is an east-west setup. See if the laser heads have a management interface you could ping - if you do a continuous ping on the other sides management interface and another internal ip address on the other site you should be able to see if the laser link is actually going down.

 

Even better if they do have a management interface and you are able to access it that may also be able to give you an idea about whats going on.

 

In general the only thing that will affect a laser link is dense fog and direct sunlight.

 

We're getting a laser link installed next week... I've done far too much research

Im with KCL on this one,

I have had these knocked out for weeks at a time during specific time of day at specific times of year when the Sun desenses the reciever at one end.

If you have the sun even indirectly in the lens it can desensitise the reciever until the light levels have dropped below a certain level.

You can fit tubes/shields to minimise the problem but some early morning sunrises can seriously cook these devices and until they cool down/stabilise they stop working.

 

We had one in a school in Peterborough that would drop out every day in summer for around 3 hours in the afternoon.

Fitted Shields and everything still needed to fail over to Wifi though for around 30 mins until a few weeks had passed then the Direct ingress issue passed and everything worked fine until next summer!
