mattx Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Long, long read here - all about a rather frightening internet worm called Conficker which has infected millions of computers and nobody knows what it's for. The Atlantic :: Magazine :: The Enemy Within 3
36Degrees Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Haven't read the article but I know how much aggravation it caused here last year - very tenacious, very clever virus.
joe90bass Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Interesting read! We got hit by it last year, and still have the odd PC that shows up with it............
PiqueABoo Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 No hype whatsoever in that article then..... On one hand I've done much more security stuff and in much more depth than most folk, but either I'm a lot better at it than I give myself credit for or they've seriouly overcooked the "elite" angle. Conficker just wasn't/isn't that thrilling for me. Woopee-doo.. it used an MD6 reference algorithm, turned off WU and so on and so forth.. so [bleepin] what?
maestromasada Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 wow!! such a nice read. Thank you for sharing it. Scary though
SimpleSi Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 Took me 3 attempts to get of the little ...... A very nasty piece of work Si
CAM Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Was lucky and nailed it first time here. I was expecting it to return at least 3 times, we even drafted Sixth Form IT Students in to assist.
e_g_r Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 We isolated it in 2 and 1/2 days through some damn hard work. What concerned me was that as far as i was aware we were all patched up as per advice from Microsoft. Still got in on a pen from someone who's dad worked for the NHS and whose work laptop had it.
fafster Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 I personally think they spent so long making the worm hard to get rid of, they released the payload in an alpha state and thus it's too buggy to work.
