Morning all, im trying to create an area where by the students can submit work in the ICT area but not open up anyone else's work?

 

Is this possible and if so how? have tryed changing permissions to the folders but keep getting under a students account access is denied?

We have one of these and its a world of pain. Students copying other students work and altering it and putting it back. Teachers not removing student work. Students using it to share shortcuts and other things.

Use your VLE? That should tag each piece of work to an individual student.

One way I think you can do this (but may not be exactly what you are looking for) is to allow write access to the folder, but not read access. This way the user should be able to drag their work into the folder, but not open it - stopping them from seeing other peoples work too.

Using the VLE is a good idea. Or email to teachers, or allow teachers into students areas with a shortcut you each year being placed somewhere only the teachers can get at and set ntfs permissions on the shortcuts so only teachers can use them.

Sounds like you need an ePortfolio system but in the mean time seems like submitting files via VLE as znova says, is a good way to go. Otherwise if you intend on going ahead with an area with shared access then is it possible to have individual folders for each student? That is you could create a share that has directories thats maybe broken down to class and students, with the appropriate permissions on the folders. That way students can only see/have access to the folders they need. This could probably be scripted to make things easier.

If setup correctly, the students won't be able to open the folder to read it's contents - thus stopping them from dragging files out. The only permission they should have for this to work (thinking off top of head) is write access. Deny read/modify etc and this should work.

In special permissions we allow Students access to list folder / read data, Create files / write data, Create folders / append data, Write attributes and Write extended attributes. i.e. they can create files or folders.

 

We grant creator owner full control. Once a student has created a folder they are the creator owner. They may do whatever they want with their own files. They can see that other students' files exist but may not view the data, modify or delete them.

 

It's not ideal but can prohibit copying / vandalism of other students' work.

 

Students and staff both need Read & Write/Change permissions on the share for the above to work.

Teachers have more access - students can drop their files in - but once there cannot see them or change them.

yes..we had that. One "Student In", one "Student out". I say had. "Student In" got killed off, "Student out" became staff and student resources, and a student work temp folder that the teachers clear every so often or we blat it.
