Audacity

I've been waiting for version 2.0 for my windows 7 image for months but i've got sick of waiting, can anyone recommend me something that does exactly the same thing and works fine in windows 7 (32bit)?

what problems are you having when you run it on Windows 7?

 

I have it running on windows 7 and have no problems.. not that i have found anyway

Well i haven't tried version 1.2.6 (i think that's right, the latest nonbeta release) as it doesn't state windows 7 support and i don't want to put a beta version on the image that is going to be used on quite literally every PC in the school!

 

So rather than wait for 2.0 with full windows 7 support i thought i'd try something different (needs to be free and be able to write the files as mp3 though, thought i found one a minute ago only to find you have to buy it to write to mp3)

 

EDIT: plus i don't like the fact that you have to specify the lamemp3 encoder files location with audacity, don't see why they cant build it in...

hmm just tried audacity 1.2.6 on my home PC (windows 7 64bit) and it seems to work fine...why do they not state windows 7 support if it works? bah, still be it'll be interesting to compare it to something else

I am not sure why they have said it is not supported, maybe they have just not updated the dialog?

They can't build in lame support because the lame project (who haven't paid for the rights to produce an mp3 codec) is illegal in most countries.

 

I deploy a portable apps version via a script direct to a c:\apps folder as the easiest way of getting it installed and working without manual intervention.

The location of the encoder is an HKCU registry entry. I have the start menu entry run a batch file which writes the registry entry then starts Audacity. It could also be done in the logon script or by a custom ADM and GPO. Sorry I don't remember the key, it shouldn't take much finding.

Had a script copy the DLL to C:\Windows\System32

ah excellent, well seeing as im making an image ill put the lame_enc.dll into the system32 folder and add that registry entry as a GPP cheers guys
