US Laptop power supplies

Anyone know of a UK based supplier who can get me (and Shaun) a US HP laptop power adaptor for our US trip, or failing that a mains power step-down convertor that isn't shaped like a breeze block?

Dont most laptop supplies contain an auto switch for the 110v supply anyhow? Usually they say 100-240V and all you need is to get a new plug or a teeny adaptor so it fits in the hole

Jamo is correct, although you can double check on the charger itself, it will be clearly listed as Input: 100-240v

you should be able to use a US flex. I do know on my Macbook i have to change the flex and thats all

I agree with all of the others, almost all of the modern ones are auto switching, you should only need a new clover-leaf lead or even a passive adapter to change the plug type.

+1 most (and typically all tier 1 vendors) computer power supplies should be 100-240v auto switching capable. Should just need to either use a UK -> US plug adaptor or as FN-GM says get a US flex plug

Thats my understanding as well all you'll need is a lead with a us mains plug on one end and then either a clover leaf or figure 8 connector to actually plug into the block.

 

Unless your psu's have the mains lead molded into the power brick itself.

Well, I didn't want to get to the states, use a basic plug adaptor and watch my Probook go 'Frrriittttzzzzz' followed by that small puff of smoke you get that says 'I am never, ever going to work again, no matter what you do to me'.

I shall take a look at my charger when I get home. Thnaks for the replies guys.

I've used various laptop chargers over the years with just a UK -> US converter and they've always been fine. But as you say - better to check!

If it doesn't do 110v I'd personaly just take the laptop and try to source a PSU while I was there. It'll probably be less hastle and cheaper.

 

You can report back and tell us if the US has a version of the purple shirt brigade.
