Offline files read only when opened offline

It appears that files are being cached for offline access however trying to open one in work for instance gives a message that it is open by another user and then gives you the options of opening a read only copy, merging it later and another option which I forget.

 

Has anyone seen this behaviour before?

This is bugging me now as I cannot get offline files to work with Win 7.

 

This is the situation I currently have.

 

Newly installed laptop.

 

Users documents all show the status of "always available" and appear to be synced.

 

When offline if I try to open an existing document I can only do so as a read only copy, the document does however open.

 

If I launch word and create a new document I can save this to the users my documents and then I can subsequently open this normally both online and offline.

 

I've reset the cache database and checked that the files are not encrypted which they are not.

Any difference when you force the sync?

Administratively assigned offline files or user-configured?

Are you syncing \\server\share\user or \\server\share\user\Documents ?

What happens if you sync a newly created test user? (if you're not already doing that?)

 

For us....

 

Administratively-assigned offline start menu - works without issue.

Administratively-assigned offline Desktop - works without issue.

Administratively-assigned brand-spanking-new userdir - works without issue.

Administratively-assigned existing userdir - works after fiddling with permissions on the userdir.

 

User-configured offline userdir - may have issues, but that may be my users not letting it sync correctly.

Forcing sync makes no difference.

Are you setting that in:

 

computer config - policies - administrative templates - network - offline files

User Config, but same path.

 

User Config > Policies > Administrative Templates > Offline Files > Administratively assigned offline files.

 

They're configured as UNC paths using the %username% variable.

 

So: \\server\users$\%username%\Documents

 

Then redirect Documents / My Documents as you would normally.

Set that to %homeshare% same result allthough it doesn't explain why I can create new files offline without a problem, will have to compare file information.

Ok I've compared the two files and the only difference is that the file that I created whilst offline that allows me to open it properly online and offline is a docx file created in Word 2010 and the other file would be a .doc created in Office 2003.
