RabbieBurns Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Heres an article comparing google and live@edu Google vs. Microsoft: Number wars, students as weapons | iGeneration | ZDNet.com Ive just rolled out live@edu for about 1800 students. Have now got the moodle integration working with it too, and also got passwords syncing to live@edu from AD. We are a MS Schools SA Agreement, so everything is MS, and it was the logical choice.. But other options might be better for you. If you are comfortable with linux, Zimbra is meant to be pretty good.
ezzauk Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 We are migrating all our student email accounts to live@edu over the summer, we will be using Dell R200, Win2k8 Ent, ILM 2007 FP1, SQL 2008 Stn, as the student email system will need to cope with 15000 students
u8dmtm Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Hi Stuart, as an ex Wirral school based employee not a million miles from you I've already implemented both and would say on balance that Live@Edu is better because it is basically like Exchange for free (controlled using Exchange Live) and you get more control than Google Apps. We are migrating all our student email accounts to live@edu over the summer, we will be using Dell R200, Win2k8 Ent, ILM 2007 FP1, SQL 2008 Stn, as the student email system will need to cope with 15000 students I though Live@Edu was MS hosted and therefore not requiring your own hardware.
rama1712 Posted April 30, 2010 Author Posted April 30, 2010 Sorry also meant to ask do any of the above do multiple domain auth. We have our Staff on our Admin domain AD and all our Pupils on Curr Domain AD
RabbieBurns Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 I though Live@Edu was MS hosted and therefore not requiring your own hardware. It is. But if you want to do password sync and provision accounts from AD rather than just run a script and read from a CSV, you can run a bit of software called Identity Lifecycle Manager. This also requires an SQL server (2005+) The person above has obviously decided to dedicate a new box to these software. I just created a new VM on an existing host for them.
nadeem Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 I'd recommend Live@Edu, I've found the support to be excellent when I've needed it, they also have an active user group too. When I was evaluating the google equivalent, I couldn't get anyone to talk to me at all
