Hard drive space required for Papercut NG - 1500 Users

Hi,

 

I am looking at implementing Papercut NG site wide to control printing for students and staff.

 

I have an oldish sempron 2200 server with 1Gb of ram.

 

It has a 36gb SCSI hard drive installed.

 

Will this be enough space for Papercut?

 

I can also add an 80gb or 160Gb SATA hd to it if it will help?

 

Any thoughts anyone?

For around 1200 users Papercut is currently using about 600mb on our server. We've been running it since September. Based on the size of our older Papercut backups I'd say it's growing at a rate of about 50-75mb/month.

I'm currently testing Papercut NG out myself. It's been running for about a week, but only managing printers since a few days ago. It's currently managing 12 printers (we have lots more we could add though), and 8,644 users (according to Papercut, and in reality probably a lot less if we cleaned up AD). So far the Papercut installation folder is 400Mb. It's running on a virtual server (Windows Server 2008 SP2 32-bit, Xeon 2GHz, 4GB RAM, 40GB HDD). The Papercut requirements state that you should consider 512Mb of RAM and 500 MB of free HDD space for more than 500 users, so I would say you should be fine with what you've got.

I'm one of the developers at PaperCut. System requirements are always a hard question for us developers - mainly because computers seem to get faster by the week! I don't think you could purchase a computer these days that's too slow to run PaperCut. HDD space is a function of the amount of data (print logs) you will store. 10 years ago, this was an issue, but today, the smallest HDD would probably last the largest university 50 years!

 

It's still good to know how much will be required as it tends to be more of an issue for backup planning. Matt has done a few graphs to help estimate disk growth over time. You can view these here:

The growth rate on average is around 8.5MB per 10,000 print jobs. Your average school (if there is such a thing!) should look at reserving around 10 to 20Mb per month.
