AngryTechnician Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 The ability to be a KMS server is built in to Server 2008 R2, so you just need to use the slmgr.vbs script to configure it. Details on that and more can be found here: Volume Activation Deployment Guide For Office 2010, you should use the Office 2010 KMS Host License Pack to install your KMS key. Some important notes: If you have the firewall enabled on your server, make sure you enable the inbound rule for KMS. The rule already exists in Windows Firewall with Advanced Services - look for Key Management Service (Tcp-In) - but it isn't enabled by either of the above processes. You will need at least 25 Windows 7 machines configured for KMS before the activations will complete. You have a 30-day grace to build that many. You will need only 5 machines with Office 2010 installed before the activations will complete. 1
HMCTech Posted July 28, 2010 Posted July 28, 2010 I am just as new to KMS and have installed our Server 2008 R2 key as articles have explained. Not ready to test the Windows 7 and 2008 R2 keys yet but with Office 2010used the tool to insert our KMS key. But our Office 2010 are still no activated and going to File > Help only gives the option to "Change product key". I assume we put the KMS key in here? But it just complains that it is not a valid key.

No, you don't, you set up a the KMS service on a server and put the keys in there, your desktops and offfice obtain the keys and activation from the server, it won't work if you manually put them in on the client, you have to use MAK keys to do that.
jc1875 Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Office 2010 (volume license version) comes with a KMS key built in and activates automatically. We use VAMT to apply a KMS key to Win7. We can them KMS activate them, again in VAMT. VAMT Download: Download details: VAMT 2.0 Using VAMT (docx): Download details: Product Activation Using VAMT 2.0
teejay Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Office 2010 (volume license version) comes with a KMS key built in and activates automatically. Erm, nope: Volume licensing editions of Microsoft Office 2010 suites and applications, Microsoft Project 2010 and Microsoft Visio 2010 require activation. Key Management Service (KMS) is a local volume activation method. To activate your Office 2010 client installations with KMS, you will need to set up a KMS host.
