Looking for a few pointers here really...

We've reached a happy medium stage here now after the initial setup panic and network settling/fettling, and now we're looking at the day to day running of things.

As part of this, I'm drawing up some logging sheets to go into our satellite switch cabs on the various floors for UPS visual checking/switch rebooting etc.

How often (and how) do you check the operation and health of your UPS at your school? All of our satcabs have SmartUPS 2200XLs in the racks, but none have the smartslot remote management cards in. Until we can get some, it'll be visual checks only/maybe a self-test. The satcabs only hold the Cisco PoE switches, no servers.

Thanks all..:)

At the moment we just wait until we either a) get told about the beeping from the cupboard or b) get alerted via Monit that a switch has failed.

But we only have 2 switch cabs out of about 6-7 with UPSs on them. I would say monthly checks would be adequate, but increase the frequency as the age of the battery increases.

We only have UPS in our main cabinet with servers so we check it when it starts beeping, apart from that the switch cabinets do not have anything.

cheers all..:) I've printed a log sheet and self-test procedure, along with a front panel diagram to sit inside the cabs, to be filled in and followed on a monthly basis. At least until we get some of the smartslot management cards. We're contemplating the ones with built-in environmental monitoring to remotely monitor the comms rooms.

Once we have some of them, the security gatehouse can monitor those 24/7, as they do with the web-enabled CliMate monitor in the main server room. Can't imagine they'll give much issue as it's only the catalysts in there. 2 have BMS-managed aircon even! Kind of pointless, but heyho. Cab3 has an air-circulation system the same as the classrooms - more than adequate.

Just trying to go belt'n'braces on the whole shooting match..heh.
