An internal transport certificate expired. The exchange server is fine so should I care? It's complaining about SMTP as well as a few other things. I didn't setup exchange and never have.

All depends on your setup really. Exchange 2007 introduced a new concept of server roles. Similar to how a Windows server can host one or more roles, this type of configuration has been implemented in Exchange Server 2007.

Server roles allow an administrator to split the functions of an Exchange server and place each role, or a combination of roles, on different servers in the organisation. This can be done for performance reasons, management reasons, or any other reason deemed necessary by the organisation's policies.

Exchange 2007 introduces five roles to the Exchange

Edge Transport

Hub Transport

Client Access

Mailbox

Unified Messaging

Many components in Exchange 2007 use certificates. Generally, all internal Exchange data paths that are secured by certificates do not require a certificate issued by a public CA.

All internal SMTP and UM traffic is secured by self-signed certificates that are installed when you run Exchange 2007 Server Setup. Although you should renew these certificates yearly by using the New-ExchangeCertificate cmdlet, you do not have to have a certificate issued by a public CA to run the default internal Exchange messaging components.

As long as everything is working you should be ok.
