Embedding video in Powerpoint 2003

Anyone know how to get a video (.avi at the moment but I can convert it to whatever) to embed into a powerpoint 2003 presentation, so the video file is not needed separately?

 

Our Y7s have a competition to make a virtual tour of the school - the winner goes on the website - but I want to put a .pps up for downloading rather than having to bundle the .pps with the video in a zip, then provide instructions for unzipping etc.

If you convert the .avi to a .swf you can embed the shockwave file.

This is how I done it when I needed to embed videos into powerpoint and it worked fine.

I've done it in the past, but I just can't remember how, the attached file (with the appropriate video in the correct location) goes some of the way, in fact I even worked out how to play and pause from controls on the same page. Maybe you can work out what I did from the file?

 

edit: sorry, just re-read your post, I don't know of a way to embed it, I believe my approach points to a file in a known location

Well, that's a start - does anyone know what will convert a .avi to a .swf? I gave it a go with a .flv file using that method but it didn't work

SuperC will convert .avi to .swf and normally works well.

IMO, WMV format would be a much better choice since it will be playable on 100% of all Windows PCs. WinFF can be used convert a video into a WMV file suitable for inserting into PowerPoint (under Output Details, select WMV > PowerPoint). I just tested this using PowerPoint 2010 and the WMV definitely gets embedded into the presentation.

 

By the way, there is an add-in called ShowRoom which will enable you to insert SWFs into PowerPoint.

What about uploading the video to YouTube and then embedding the URL into your PowerPoint presentation (see link below for details)? The people viewing it will already be online so they won't have any problem watching the video, plus the PPS will be significantly smaller since it doesn't contain the video itself.
