Static IP's for your switches

I have read a couple of things on here about using static IP for your newtowork switches. But instead of eating into your range you use alternat/local range.

 

So if i have a 172.38.*.* ip range what could i do with the switches?

It's a lot of hassle for negligable benefit IMHO (there's obviously security benefits and you don't eat into your range but...). Anyway, just use say 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.x and add a second IP address to your workstation's NIC (e.g. 192.168.0.1/24).

You could use any range you want (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x) but i dont see the benefit really apart from a slight security advantage but even then I dont see why it would be worth it. I have seen this used with printers though so only the print server is on the client range and the print server is on both networks but still I dont see a big advantage of that either.
