Now, the Dark Lords said that today's PPP was due to one of the DNS servers being broken.

 

Now, why would the failure of one DNS server cause such a massive problem?

 

Why doesn't the other one just go a bit more slowly under the extraload?

 

Does anyone else run 2 DNS servers of their own - what would they expect to happen if one failed

 

Answers from those who know about such things.

 

Or is it duff gen?

Use opendns? I use it at home and friends who

had ISP dns go down he was very greatful.

I currently use one of googles dns as its easy to remember 8.8.8.8 and then an opendns one as the backup - two seperate companies less chance of both going poop at once

It was to do with the firewalls it seems

according to the server monitor on the westfield website 2 of the webproxies were down.

@SimpleSi - DNS fail-over depends on the client, some OSs even though they have an option for multiple DNS servers do not always fail over to them automatically if they have been able to contact the other one at first. Ideally it should just fail-over to the second specified one but this does not always happen. It also relies on the primary failing outright as if it is still connectible then even if it is handing out junk it will still be used. The configuration of upstream devices is also a factor as some of those may have only been configured with a single DNS address.
