Move to SQL 2008 and backups

We have recently had sims moved to sql2008. I currently use backup exec 12 on a backup server with agents across the servers. I currently now can't backup the full instance of Sims under sql2008, I think i'll have to move to backup exec 12.5 for sql2008 support? Currently I have set maintence plans to do a daily DB backup run, I then backup this folder to the backup exec every night. What are peoples opinions on this is it worth moving up a version of backup exec to backup the full instance or am i covered with the current backing up of the .bak files and logs created through the sql management studio?

I personally don't use BackupExec but I do use both of the methods that you have described to otherwise back up my data and I've never had any issues restoring the database when anything has gone wrong before.

Can you not just stop the MSSQL$SIMS2008 service as a pre job script and then start it again as a post job script. That's what I've had running here for an age now and backs up the folder structure "as is". It's ideal seeing as no-one should be using SIMS that late into the evening.
