I intend to create a separate web server for our internal sixth form website, this would be updated by a couple of students which is why I want to keep it internal and separate from the system hosting our main site (for security etc).

 

I have found AppServ that will run on a windows box and best of all its free It has Apache, PHP 5, MySQL etc and theres a tutorial at http://www.pcmech.com/show/network/690/

The current favored flavour of VLE is Moodle (http://moodle.org/) and is popular amongs most of us here. As for the back end stuff and Windows there are many packages such as Apache2Triad (http://apache2triad.net/) which will install all of the standard LAMP software ver, very easily. If you need help we are all here for you.

Linux box running Samba + Apache can do this.

I'd like to do this too. Did a php course where a linux box was set up as the server and we all had an account set up on it. There's just the case of modifying the httpconfig file in Apache with user accounts with permissions to foders on the server - and you have FTP and web access.

 

If anyone can help with those configurations it'd help me a lot.

As I mentioned. If you use Samba 3, in paticular its winbind component, your NT/2k users and groups will be accessible to Linux. They just appear as standard Unix accounts. This greatly simplfies access control to the website(s) running on the webserver.

 

Also as this will be a machine on your internal network you can dispense with FTP and use Samba to export the users websites as windows shares.

I used Apache running on a secondary admin server. Runs fine. What I have started doing is using simple tools like Publisher to get a calendar and news items on the pages for staff only (right now) and a list of internal email addresses I configured using Server's mail software.

 

Simple but effective.

Yep- I know that. But the teaching staff wanted their "inter--raa--nettt" NOW. Sp I gave them one. We are actually testing at the moment MS Sharepoint services.

 

Like I said- it's a very quick and easy solution to get you going. I haven't got the time (or the inclination) to sit down and hand code the thing or even to design pretty pages using Dreamweaver etc.

 

It works. That makes me happy :-)

Have a look at the Firefly system used at http://www.stpaulsschool.org.uk. It was written by two of our pupils and is hosted on IIS. It's dead easy to setup and configure, and an awful lot of our teachers make good use of it.

 

It uses asp.net, IIS and SQL. We also use it for streaming video and audio in Windows media format from another of our servers.
