Group policy can configure the download in the background and schedule for install together with removing the user annoying features (notifications) for non admins etc.

 

Have a play with the settings and see if you can make it do what you want.

I have had a play, and it turns off the auto restart. But it does prompt people saying to finish updates you need to restart pc. Is there a way to trun that off completely?

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update

 

Double-click on “Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations”

 

“No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Update installation” Disable it! Enable it!

im pretty sure thats also in the same gpo that your messing with to turn auto restart off?

But even with these policies enable it still prompts for a restart. Just not automatically, and it doesnt remind them either. It just states that restart is needed and gives them an option for yes or no.
