Deploying PaperCut to the network

Hi all,

 

I'm trying to get printing costs under control and so have got PaperCut on trial as it seems very popular.

 

I've got the server side running no problem, all users and printers are setup just fine to start with, but I want to get the client side program pushed out silently for all teaching staff and I can' figure out how to do it.

 

I've tried putting "cmd /c "start \\servername\PCClient\win\pc-client-local-cache.exe --silent"" in the GPo of UserConfig -> Admin -> System ->Logon - >Run these programs at user logon, but it then displays the full install prompts and asks for credentials. This might be ok for the teachers but certainly not for when we deploy it for the kids.

 

How does everyone else do this and am I just being thick as usual in deploying this?

It's far easier to use the executable that runs straight off a network share, no installation required and it loads fast enough.

is that the pc-client-local-cache.exe ?

pc-client.exe or pc-client-java.exe

 

I find the java version launches faster.

we made an MSI for the client software and deployed through gpo

Have a look at p76 of the user guide as you can override the default cache path which I suspect is your problem.

 

As regards scripting - not yet - but will be looking to trial over the summer term.

We have many options for deploying this but I prefer to run it from a UNC share as updates are instant with the next logon.

 

In a GPO navigate to User Configuration/Policies/Windows Settings/Scripts/Logon

 

Script Name: \\\\win\pc-client-local-cache.exe

Script Parameters: -q -s -m

Yeah - I'd go for the local cache version as it then doesn't throw a wobbley when the pc can't get a network connection.

Thanks for all the help, it's now working nicely using the network version on a startup script.

 

Politics have now kicked in though and it's causing great fun and games, however I am only doing what the powers that be have told me to do and funilly enough everyone will have a go at me but won't go and talk to the boss...

 

Regards the scripting; I've just used one of the sample scripts to redirect printing from the colour machine to the black and white laser printer and it works a treat, really impressed.

I'm going to try and get time based conditions working now for certain users.

I've had a play with the advanced scripting to change the print cost for staff printing to a lesser rate then students. Worked perfectly and was really easy to use

I've written a VB startup script which copies the client application onto the local workstations if it doesn't already exist. It runs a lot quicker when launched locally, particularly over wireless.

 

For running it, it's simply added to the startup group for 'all users' again done by script. Works like a charm here for all students and staff. Ocassionally it doesn't run at startup for whatever reason. To overcome this, there's also an icon copied to the desktop to allow users to launch the program manually.
