usb extender not working

Hi hope someone can help me on this one,

 

we had a company install a whiteboard and because of the way the class is laid out the doard is on one side of the room and the pc that drives it is on the other.

So in order to connect both devices they ran cat5 cable from the board through the roof and down the wall to connnect to the pc.

they then added a usb extender with one end accomodating the cat5 cable and the other converts to a usb lead to plug into the usb.

Active inspire is installed (ITS A PROMEATHEAN BOARD!)but the pc does not recognise the device.

in device manager in usb controllers it comes up as an unknown device.

I can only conclude that the firm that fitted it did not install the device driver for the usb extender or something else is at fault.

I have also tried the extender on another pc and has the same problem.

I have tried contacting the company who fitted it but always voicemail-think they are turning out to be cowboys.

 

I dont think im being thick and would probably consider myself quite a logical thinker but i need advice on this one!!

 

i have search on line for drivers for the extender but there is not enough iformation on the extender to go on its not branded or anything.

I bet the PC has USB 2 ports and is trying to negotiate a USB 2 fast connection.

Ok to do this you go to device manager and disable the advanced USB hub this makes the usb interface run at 1.1 speeds and works over a much greater distance.

did the "company" show you the board working before you signed it off?

We had a look at doing this as well. We were able to use video/audio over Cat5 boxes (which worked well) but we were unable to source a USB2.0 over cat53e without paying £400+ per whiteboard. Just ensure that your usb extender can support USB2.0

the pc that the usb extender is attacthed to is an old dell gx270 so i dont think it even has usb2.0 as standard.

As for watching the company test it and sign it off,no i was not there unfortunatley i am only there for three hours per support session,im not a resident technician.But i was told by the IT co-ordinator that they had left it working.I doubt that very much!!!

 

I will try to see if its a usb 2.0 problem,and let you know the outcome.

Ok, I'm aware of this being a 4 year old thread, but I'm experiencing the EXACT same problems on a couple of my schools Promethean Activboards (v378 Pro). I'm a part-time technician and still haven't found the solution.
