GAS Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Hi, Is there any school using Citrix XenServer Essentials academic, how much do you pay for licence and how is running and what hardware do you have. I'm looking to change our Virtual server from Virtual Lion to Citrix XenServer and the management software is not Java?? Thank you in advance for your input.
Ric_ Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Yes... bought it when it was called 'Enterprise' but I think Subscription Advantage is about £100 per server. It's ace... I run it on 2x Sun X4440 (4x Opteron 8347HE with 32GB RAM) connected to a Sun Storage 7110 via NFS. I have 17 VMs split across the two at the moment - I can run all of them on one box without it breaking a sweat though! The management software is a kind of Windows MMC... not Java AFAIK! 1
GAS Posted March 18, 2010 Author Posted March 18, 2010 Thank's Ric, do you mind explaning more on Subscription please or the licance side, do i have to pay every year or just one of cost ??? also extra charge for licance to migrate from different VM. witch server you running as VM DC, Exchange, SIMS ect...??? Thank's
Soulfish Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 We also have Citrix XenServer with Citrix Essentials Enterprise for XenServer. Xenserver its self is free, but you have to pay for Essentials. I think that's around £900ish/server. It's a one off fee for the license and that includes something called Subscription Advantage which gives you free updates/upgrades for a year. If you want to continue with that (so you can always use the latest versions) it's about £160ish/server/year. 2
john Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Thats about the pricing I had seen for it, I beleive Specialist Schools and Academys Trust have a good deal on Citrix stuff so if your a Specialist School give them a buzz. I didn't know about the Advantage Sub though.... 1

I didn't know about the Advantage Sub though.... You don't have to have the Advantage Sub, but it's good if you want the new features. For example my SA sub expires mid-April, but I'm renewing it because I want the new stuff in 5.6 that's likely to be released in May Just looking at the Citrix Campus agreement and that's looking very expensive (more than our MS Schools agreement!) 1
john Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 What exciting features is there going to be in 5.6 then?
Soulfish Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Memory over-provisioning through memory ballooning, automated workload balancing, better snapshots of VMs + a few other things. There's a beta out now (and more info) at Citrix XenServer 5.6 Beta Program 1
john Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Memory over-provisioning through memory ballooning I can envision my HP Proliants floating away with Hellium Balloons now...... So that's the infamous over-allocation of RAM that people say is why they use VMWare over Citrix sorted then. There really is getting less and less reasons to use VMware in my view now....
Soulfish Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Just need better support from sun on using the s7000 range with xenserver . Although this may happen as the oracle hypervisor is based on xen as well
john Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Just need better support from sun on using the s7000 range with xenserver . Although this may happen as the oracle hypervisor is based on xen as well Why whats wrong with the S7000 range with Citrix
Soulfish Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Why whats wrong with the S7000 range with Citrix Nothing - just they don't support any of the "special" features that you get with StorageLink
john Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Nothing - just they don't support any of the "special" features that you get with StorageLink Oh thats all is it phew! You were concerning me then that you were going to say well they make them explode or something!
