Blocking igoogle

Hi,

 

I know that there is a thread on this already but there is no real solution on there.

 

We use a program called Browse Control to block websites.

 

Is there anyone who uses this software and can help me block igoogle but not google?

This has just come up here due to a pupil having an inappropriate theme! Unfortunately we only have EMBC's Netsweeper at the moment so this could be quite tricky although I'm going to try the suggestions in the other thread about blocking modules.

Hi with regards the EMBC Netsweeper setup I was able to block iGoogle by adding the following entries to my global deny list:

 

I cannot post links yet so @m leaving a deliberate gap in the following links.

If your filtering sofware supports regular expressions, this one will gracefully redirect users back to the google search page.

Search: (^https?://(?:[^/]*\.)google\.\w{1,3}(?:\.\w{1,3})?)/ig

Repalce: \1

 

If not, you can simply block the urls posted by jamescole1978.

Unfortunately this only covers the english versions of igoogle, so you may also wish to cover the non-english versions to prevent browsing through google translate.

e.g:

• google.ru/ig (Russian)
  
• google.sk/ig (Slovak)
  
• google.com.tr/ig (Turkish)
  

 

And many more besides (80ish in total I believe)

I know its been a while but I wonder if Jedi Master OB1 could explain where/how you might add a policy to do this regex replace in the new version of smoothwall. Not quite sure which is the right place to do it. thanks

You should have a new content modification rule called 'Disable iGoogle [bETA]' to apply as you see fit.

This is what we use to block IGoogle background images using Impero. We set up a html content block for *cpbackgroundimg*.
