Had to happen some day... running Linux on one of my main machines

 

One of our techs is really into Linux so persuaded me to give Ubuntu a try again... so far so good. Customised the themes to something I really like the look of now & Conky gives the techie touch

 

Wireless didn't work at first on my x100e but found a site with the drivers, sorted via command line easily enough and now it's pretty much working nicely. One thing I have to do is get Office 2007 working on there though, still far from convinced by OpenOffice...

I always maintain that Apple's App Store is a rip-off of apt-get and the Debian repositories

The big repositories are indeed magic - if you ever want something installed, check them first. Installing from packages makes removing again much cleaner, and they're often well-configured for generic use or will even prompt you during installation (mysql for example). If you don't find what you're looking for straight away, have a good hunt around in case of package renames - in Debian, for instance, the Firefox browser is called Iceweasel.

 

When Lucid Lynx is published you will get OO.org v3.2, so you might find that works better for you.

I love apt-get it makes life so easy, also the fact you can only know part of a package name.

 

Sudo apt-get install foo[tab]

 

will auto complete based on latest repository updates.

 

There was a whole thing on Apt-get in the latest Linux format mag.
