I have a pretty strict group policy enforced on our students. Recently, I was told in our elementary schools, when students plug in a microphone to record dialog for a project, they get a message saying, "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I know it's my student policy because regular restricted users do not have this issue. Any ideas?

Does anything happen when you plug one in as an administrator? Sometime an app run when you plug in a microphone. Maybe that is being blocked?

It does work as an administrator.

I did find the fix. I modified our student lockdown GPO to allow only the sound applet to appear in the control panel. Once the gpo took affect, students could plug in a microphone with no issue.

This setting is under User Configuration>Policies>Administrative Templates>Control Panel. I enabled "Show only specified Control Panel items" and added mmsys.cpl to the list of allowed items.
