DFS seems to only like FQDN

Hello,

 

Just trying DFS out.

 

Have created namespace etc, when mapping drives through script i have to put FQDN in:-

 

\\lab-domain.domain.org.uk\shared_folder

 

cannot seem to use:

 

\\lab-domain\shared_folder

 

Anyone encountered this

You certainly shouldn't need the FQDN - I've never used them but I have only used networks which have WINS installed.

 

If you're not running WINS then have a look at How DFS Works: Remote File Systems - "How DFS Works in Environments Without WINS"

It works here without the FQDN (domain\netlogon instead of domain.com\netlogon, you only need WINS in a routed network or where you have netbios broadcasts disabled.

Using DFS on Server 2003 and 2008 always worked for me with FQDN and the short name. Moving to 2008 R2 however to take advantage of the new features it only worked with the FQDN.

 

A quick fix by a tech was to add the short name as an alias in DNS pointing to the FQDN. This works but I will investigate further when time permits.

Do you have NetBIOS over Tcpip enabled?

 

 

 

 

 

@ danrhodes - yes if you run a small non routed network with no Exchange. There's still a load of apps out there that require WINS MS just can't get rid of it, it should be on it's last legs now though.
