TV issue

I've been asked by a colleague to give my opinion on a fault one of their personal TV's has developed.

 

This fault displays issues when using digital TV only - what happens is, the sound drops out and the image is displayed with all the incorrect colours. Analogue TV works fine still, as does teletext.

 

They paid for a Comet engineer to come and look at it, and their view was that the 'screen was broken, and would be £850 to replace' when the TV is only worth £650...

 

To me, the screen still works fine - ie. it displays analog signals fine. It makes me think it is some form of processor which is faulty...

 

So, has anyone got any advice for them as to who to contact, where to go etc... to repair it. He's based in Minehead, Somerset - so somewhere relatively nearby would be nice.

might be worth trying a signal booster / different freeview tuner might be weak signal/ competing signal (esp if an adjacent area has had its analogue switchoff recently) it could even be the decoder for freeview is borked

I have had similar issues with a freeview box - it also kept freezing while the updates where sent out in the early hours i replaced the freeview box and now works fine so an external freeview box my sort the issue

If it's in warrenty then get it replaced.

 

If your friend has not had 'fair use' out of it then he can go to the seller and demand a repair or replacement for free under the sales of goods act.

 

I did this to Tesco when my Washer dryer broke down just before its 2nd birthday - living on my own It only does 2 loads a week. Tesco stumped up repair charges, the cost of a new kitchen floor and a new Washing Machine :-)

Comet guy is talking carp. The fish you understand, nothing bodily...

 

Try an external freeview box. It may be the signal is poor in that area; a hill in the way or some such. One of the big disadvantages of digits is that if they aren't there, then you lose the picture completely, whereas analogue degrades a long way before it falls over.

 

Under European consumer protection, we are entitled to much more then the "Years guarantee" that most of us get palmed off with!

The fact analogue works OK it's possibly something to do with signal quality or the cabling as digital terrestrial is a lot more picky. Have you tried re-scanning for digital terrestrial channels and looking at the signal and quality bars?

 

I'd recommend you delete all existing channels and scan as new. If necessary buy a signal booster, but don't buy any cheap import rubbish. Some cheap boosters can actually make the signal worse believe it or not!

To see if it is a Screen problem try plugging in a DVD player/Games console etc. That will tell you if it is the screen or not.
