alonebfg Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 I have a bit of as problem i need to deploy a reg file to some of the computers on my network i could use gpo but i need to make it permanent and i dont really want to go round all the computers and put in on manualy any idears
Norphy Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Make a startup or login script depending on whether it is per user/machine or per machine settings you need to set. The syntax is: regedit /s A full list of command line switches for regedit is here
alonebfg Posted November 3, 2006 Author Posted November 3, 2006 yes but it only need to be deployed once it is in the reg it can stay it is only to stop the silly people turning the screen upside down using the context menu on the dell machines
mac_shinobi Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 In the vbscript just use regread to check if the registry key exists if it does then do nothing and if it does not then add it Simple really
NetworkGeezer Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 A Dell? Is it an Optiplex? It probably uses Intel onboard graphics. You need to remove remove the values HotKeyCmds and IgfxTray from the key HKLM\Software\Microsft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run As it is HKLM you need to use a Startup script as the a logon script won't have the necessary rights to have to make the change. You can use a batch script of the form REG DELETE HKLM\Software\Microsft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /f /v HotKeyCmds REG DELETE HKLM\Software\Microsft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /f /v IgfxTray
mac_shinobi Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 I take it a startup script runs it as a system service which has the access rights where as a logon script does not or how does it work ?
NetworkGeezer Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Yes that's the idea. If you need to make machine wide changes during the boot process then you will need to put them in a startup script. Logon scripts are need to make changes in the context of the logged on user e.g. map drives/printers etc.
alonebfg Posted November 3, 2006 Author Posted November 3, 2006 yes thats the one the Optiplex i have got the key edit from intel but just need to add it to all the dells.
mac_shinobi Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 adding printers isnt that much of an issue with the new R2 PMC Much easier
NetworkGeezer Posted November 3, 2006 Posted November 3, 2006 Alternatively if it's a one time permanent operation then why not just run a command from a network admin PC or server which applies the command to to each machine in a list of the Dells. for /f %pc in (list_of_dells.txt) do REG DELETE \\%pc\HKLM\software\blah\etc Oh yeah forgot to mention REG is builtin to XP and 2003. If you are using Windows 2000 then you will have to get it from the Window 2000 Resource Kit.
alonebfg Posted November 3, 2006 Author Posted November 3, 2006 i like it is sounds good that last one i will have to try that on monday i just hope it works otherwise i got to do it manual as going in to upside down screens is getting to me.
molesm Posted November 7, 2006 Posted November 7, 2006 You can always use a program called advanced installer, from http://www.advancedinstaller.com/ there is a free version and with it you can import reg files and make an msi, and then deploy it the same way you do with normal packages
