So, got in from work tonight, switched on my PS3 and the date says 31st December 1999.

Tried to play a game and before it starts get the error message "registration of the trophy information could not be completed (8001050F)" and then it shuts down.

Worked fine last night.

After a trip to Google found Sony had said people were having problems logging into PSN Error: 8001050F Takes Down PlayStation Network - playstation network - Gizmodo

But I have not been on PSN for months! How can it be a PSN issue when I cannot play games that have never been on PSN, been updated or collected any trophies?

Cannot play games off-line, cannot play downloaded games, cannot change date and time and cannot connect to PSN.

It seems all 'non-slim' PS3 models are having problems. Could not get through to Sony suppport.

Anyone else having problems?

Official statement from Sony:

"As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

"We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

"Errors include:

* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".

* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."

* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"

* Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

"We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

"As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused."

the fix will be in tomorrow

The speculation is that Sony are saying it will be fixed in 24hrs is they are hoping it will go away when the date catches up. Some applications did the same on the 1/1/2010 and then worked again a day later.

If you are feeling brave:

Take PS3 apart down to MB removal.

Unplug battery.... give it a clean while you are there.

Plug battery back in and put it back together.

Turn on and set clock date to correct time.

Jobsagoodun.

P.s. I'm not posting rumours, I've just been through it. 20GB Japanese release PS3.

after fixing a ylod on someone elses ps3 it has too many screws to be bothering with.

after stripping it down i must say t they are quite well put together have you seen the size of the fan in the old phats it is huge...... getting to the battery is a pain.

i will wait till tomorrow i am not that desparate to play.

Woohoo my ps3 works, the psn is a lonely place right now, no one on my list is online and I have a fair few now lol.

I was sure it was on till 2am last night and thats why its working I guess.

Slim is ok. This only effects the FAT PS3s.

The fat currently needs the motherboard battery "power cycled" to allow you to set the correct date properly and sign in to PSN. This is not recommended by Sony for obvious reasons.
