I was reading a thread the other day about how improvements in Flash have made Shockwave almost redundant and so allot of sites don't use it anymore. In fact they were saying that they felt Adobe might just merge the two and just have Flash.

This started me thinking how many important sites actually use Shockwave and should I even bother deploying or maintaining it.

Anyone here not bothered deploying it and if so what issues have you found?

Thanks.

I say deploy it too. We use the BBC stuff alot, revisewise and bitesize and that stuff uses shockwave. There would be a riot here if I did not put it out to the masses.

Just my opinion though!

i forgot about shockwave when i was at my last place, it is still used as after a while i realised it wasn't the teachers making it up but there "flash" websites that didn't work where actually shockwave sites. I think mymaths uses it of something if you maths department use that then its a must

Definitely keep it. The fact that Flash has now superceded it doesn't mean there aren't loads of sites out there which still use it, not to mention Boardworks, AQA e-Science and many other resources which contain it.

I dump it on our image, but I rarely bother updating it unless there's any major security updates out for it.

I'd install it, it will save you the inevitable headache down the line when someone wants a website or software working "right now" that uses it.

It's for this reason I'm thinking about deploying the real quicktime (even tho I hate it) since a bunch of websites/software rely on it and only it :(

Should be noted that lots of the famously "well written" Educational Software out there uses Shockwave and won't work without it.

Especially in Primary but Science, PE etc. still have Shockwave dependancies at Secondary.

Yep that's what I wondered. Like I say i've unassigned the old version and deployed the new version.

Typically there's a small issue grrrr, 11.5r596 - 11.5r600 - 11.5r601 all deployed and worked just fine. I've deployed 11.5r606 and each time it's run it says configuring shockwave for 10 seconds then starts.

It must need something adding to the user profile i'll have a play later.

Right I thought i'd post this as the issue seems to of been introduced in v11.5.2.602

When attempting to deploy Shockwave v11.5.2.602 an incorrect repair of the MSI is triggered on first use of the software for each user.

I've not found a solution yet but this is exactly what happens with version v11.5.2.606. It only seems to happen for 'users' though if I log on as an admin to troubleshoot the issue I don't see the issue.

A few posts blame a virus but i've tested this on several PC's including a new build and scanned them all with upto date AV.
