Printer management software is great most of the time but what happens if users are printing to a printer in another room.

Yes I know kow it is possible to have banner pages to identify who sent a particular printer job but these tend to waste a lot of paper and toner/ink.

Is there a way to autmatically put a header or footer each page of a print job the identify the user. I am thinking of something like the way faxes print the sender's phone number of company name at the top of each page of a fax.

Any ideas?

Trouble is that only works for word and others where you can have a header/footer and put some code in.

Ideal would be some sort of overlay driver to add it to every print no matter what printer or application.

I seem to remember something about being able to do this with a CUPS-based print server. Not sure where the thread is though.
