soveryapt Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Ok, so tomorrow, one of my schools is having a fundraising day and one of the activities is a Scalextric that our IT Coord bought for her son last year but has never used it, so brought it in. So this morning, myself and a few pupils from the group running it have been setting it up which has brought back all the childhood stuff of getting the connections JUST right to make contact with the track and then the balance between speed for getting round the loops and then skill for going round the corners. Oh the fun. I've even had the controllers apart and services the solder joints on the cars to make sure they work! lol .. So how's everyone elses morning been?
Batman Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I have to say I'm envious. I'm reminded of James May with his Scalextric shenanigans. Since you ask, I spent the morning optimising a stack of big png files and cropping photographs for a website.
SYNACK Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 We found a set of those a couple of months back and decided to see if we could make them go faster by using a more powerful wall adapter, the boost from 9V to 24V was quite noticable and lots of fun till the variable resistor in one of the hand controllers heated up way too much and set fire to itself 1

Optimising PNG Files huh .. that's a job I have on tomorrow at this school to get the website finished for a staff training meeting on Monday twilight .. woo! (though as the track will be up tomorrow, I'm doubting if I'll get much work done to be honest! lol)

OBVIOUSLY once that happens you'd have to replace the motors to something a bit more substantial .. hmmm .. I wonder if the teacher who it belongs too would mind if I fetched in a few toys tomorrow! lol ..

Not long but they barely stay on the track long enough to burn out, they don't do corners. We had to replace the bottom magnet with a neodium one from a hard drive to get it to stick propperly and then it just dismantled the track taking the corner piece with it if you used more than a milimeter or so of controller depression. You also could not go full noise on it even on a straight as it tended to take the track apart. We were looking at mounting the track to something and getting bigger wheels but realised that we had already wasted at least half a day on a minor distraction and would need to uprate the motors then anyway. The whole set had that lovely smell of electricity barely contained in wires, motors and tracks that were way to under rated to operate safely. We were, at the time wondering which would be the first bit to catch fire. It turned out to be the controller I was holding

Tick. I now want a lego house, with a lego room big enough for a big scalextric track intertwining with railway
