Geoff Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 Have you looked at these previous threads on the subject? http://edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2948 http://edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1850 http://edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1231 http://edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=169
6Foot2 Posted October 20, 2006 Author Posted October 20, 2006 Yes I have tried these already. Don't work. I want staff to be able to use USB's (?) but not students. Looking for other answers. Please excuse any typos.
djm968 Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 You can modify the system.adm file to hide or prevent access to any combination of drive letters. This MS article give details how, but this may not be possible with Viglen http://support.microsoft.com/kb/231289
Guest richard Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 It can be done in a Viglen Classlink enviroment But I don't have the info to hand at present. When I have it I'll post it if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Ric_ Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I take it that you have denied access to the control panel?
6Foot2 Posted October 24, 2006 Author Posted October 24, 2006 I take it that you have denied access to the control panel? Yes, we have done that, but they still get through when they use the route described earlier in this thread. I am now looking at using Active Directory to deny them access to the files used in running the Portable Media Devices applet in Control Panel.
6Foot2 Posted October 24, 2006 Author Posted October 24, 2006 OK so following my last entry, what are the properties of the Portable Media Devices shortcut (applet)? If I know what files are called maybe I can block student access to USB memory sticks that way. Please don't say that I can't do it because Windows Explorer should not be blocked. I don't want to block Explorer, just access to the USBs for students.
cc_topcat Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Have you sorted the problem?? As I may have the answer....
6Foot2 Posted January 19, 2007 Author Posted January 19, 2007 I have disabled the navigation pane in Windows Explorer. This way when students click the Folders button the navigation pane is empty. This solves the problem, but is not as elegant as I would like and it is in force for students and staff. I would be VERY interested in looking at your solution.
cc_topcat Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Hopefully this should sort the problem... In Active Directory. Right click on 'Students' and select 'properties' goto 'group policy' Highlight 'students' in object links and then click edit This will open group policy object editor. Under 'user configuration' select 'administrative templates' select 'viglen' and then 'windows components' In the 'windows explorer' select the 'Hide these specified drives in My computer' drive code for usb should show '2044' To stop the little .... using usb use the drive code '66191356' The only thing you need to be sure about is that what drives you want them to see... this will allow a, b, r, s, t. Ps very good idea to write down all chances made!! Hope this is of help.
6Foot2 Posted January 19, 2007 Author Posted January 19, 2007 I can't use this solution because I am limiting what students see and what connections they have. I don't want them to be able to see the drives you mentioned in your reply. Thanks anyway.
6Foot2 Posted January 19, 2007 Author Posted January 19, 2007 They need U:\ [MyDocuments], R:\ [Resources] and T:\ [Topics]
cc_topcat Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 You need code '65404924' All other drives will be hiden from user.
psydii Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Blocking access to usb drives by hiding the icons in explorer is trivial to bypass. From threads all over the web/listservs/usenet the only option is globally disabling removable media or a third party application. Vista apparently has the functionality needed built in. To globally disable various types of removable media on a per group policy: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555324
6Foot2 Posted January 24, 2007 Author Posted January 24, 2007 I know there are replies here, but I can't see them until I post a new reply. I know this because I replied to cc_topcat's question about which drives students need to see [again] and the rest of the replies popped up. I deleted my duplicated reply to cc_topcat and they disappeared. How odd! So this is me posting a reply so that I can see the other replies that I currently cannot see.
