Web Server Specs

Hello,

 

We are going to be hosting our website, helpdesk, Email & reporting system in house soon. What would be a decent spec server for this.

 

Website - Joomla

Helpdesk - Spiceworks

Email - Kerio

Report System - Custom

 

All will be running on mysql also.

I'd recommend virtualising, and running Linux for some, and Windows Server only where necessary (Spiceworks at present) - so look for hardware with decent virtualisation support. Depending on budget - HP DL385 is a strong performer.

Only issue is we have a very limited linux knowledge base. and at the moment all our servers are windows based and they have been for a long time with no issues. So really going to staying with IIS and windows Server.

I can see where you're coming from, my Linux knowledge was the same a year ago. I just picked up the essentials to do what I needed, now I just administer our website with ftp, and it gets on with everything else itself.

 

With email involved (how many users) it comes down to RAM really - Server 2008 R2 with as much as possible, with a fast set of disks and redundancy. What sort of money are you looking at spending?

Well the spec of our email server at the moment is really bad! its on a very old RM machine,

server 2003, Xeon 2.4 processor and 1GB of RAM and that works for approx. 700 users.

 

Hmm budget it really depends on finance really but i would say no more than 1.5k for the hardware and the windows license.

You'll probably be look at the DL160 series or equivalent (Dell etc) in that budget, with a couple of SAS srives in RAID. To be fair we run a very similar spec machine to yours for our email and it still copes, though it only recognises 1GB of RAM in Linux and needs a second processor.

i wouldnt go as far down as dl160.

 

use a dl360 g6 if your budget can stretch. i would sugest this running in built virtulisation from windows 2008 r2.

With disks, licences etc, that looks closer to 2.5k though. Obviously, if you can go for the better server.

2008 r2 web edition but i would not use 2003 as 2003 only supports 2gb of ram.
