Manual Windows update failed on newly install Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Std. x86

Hi All,

 

I'm now experiencing a very hard to understand situation, this is happening on my newly reinstall Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Standard on 32 bit platform.

 

I've installed SP2 and IE 8 manually and then initiate the Windows Update from the website but it always failed, see the following attached log.

I've activated this copy of Windows and also join this to the domain.

 

any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I hate to say it but it sounds to me like a Virus. I know conficker will stop you from getting MS updates, if you have allready connected it to the domain and dont/didnt at the time have up-to-date anti-virus you may allready have a conficker install.

 

It might be worth scanning with S.T.I.N.G.E.R or something anyway just to make sure.

See the attached screenshot, there is no obvious error message related to WSUS ?

It looks like it may have corrupted the Windows update DB and hence it trying to install a whole bunch of patches that it does not need, these of course fail because they are already either up to date or newer in the SP.

 

I would try rebuilding the Windows Update DB on the machine then re-running windows update to get the appropriate patches only.

It may also be that the machine needed another restart before it could apply any more patches. This can happen if one hangs up and does not release windows installer.

Hi SYNACK,

 

I've managed to downloaded the MBSA but somehow it failed to run with the "The catalog file is damaged or an invalid catalog. "

 

anyway, I tried to stop the WUAUSERV service and then delete the content of "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download" the download is now working fine.

 

it seems that the download directory got corrupted ?
